Energy-efficient electric motors — savings and stable operation without downtime
The main indicator of the energy efficiency of electric motors is the efficiency - the ratio of the useful electrical energy to the total energy obtained, expressed as a percentage. Efficiency measures how efficiently the motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. The higher it is, the less energy the motor loses.
What is the energy efficiency of electric motors?
Energy efficiency means the optimal use of energy, which reduces its consumption for identical load capacity.
The main losses are conventionally divided into:
mechanical (heat dissipation, arising from friction in the dynamic parts of the motor);
magnetic (for example, due to Foucault currents);
electrical (losses of steel during current flow).
Classification of energy efficiency
A classification of electric motors has been developed and approved. According to Regulation 2019/1781 (EU), four energy efficiency classes have been defined:
IE1 - normal (standard);
IE2 - high;
IE3 - premium;
IE4 - super-premium.
(IE stands for "International Energy Efficiency Class")
Since the level of energy efficiency plays a significant role in solving energy-saving problems, the European Union has approved a regulation according to which from 01.01.2017 the minimum efficiency of electric motors produced in the European Union must be at least IE3 (IE2 only with AC drive).
Advantages of using energy-efficient motors
IE3, IE4 motors can operate even under prolonged overload in the range of 10-15%. The effect of their implementation in production, in addition to saving electricity consumption, also includes reducing the power required to operate the equipment, reducing noise levels, and maintenance costs (longer service life before failure).
By saving electricity, the client saves money and increases the profitability of the solution. The use of a high-quality energy-efficient motor with high-quality components and regular maintenance ensures uninterrupted operation and prevents equipment damage due to wear or voltage spikes.
Quality features of Ledermann motors
Electric motors Ledermann (German company LEDERMANN Industrie Werke) are developed and manufactured at a modern enterprise with the involvement of highly qualified personnel on the latest production equipment. The company produces energy-efficient motors that allow enterprises to save electricity.
The increase in the energy efficiency class in new models of electric motors is achieved through the optimization of the motor design (rotor, winding), improving the quality of materials and components used (including insulation materials and bearings).
Ledermann motors have a varnish insulation system that is resistant to aggressive gases, vapors, dust, oil, and humid air. It helps the winding withstand vibration loads and extends the motor's service life. The motors also have an efficient cooling system. The fan installed on the shaft adjusts the cooling power proportionally to the change in the motor's operating speed. The rigid construction absorbs vibrations that occur in unexpected situations during operation. Standardization of bearing tolerances allows reducing friction and extending their service life.
What is the payback period for the solution?
Today in Ukraine, there is a problem of replacing an outdated fleet of electric motors. Many devices that are still in use are a legacy of the Soviet era. These motors have already worked for 30+ years and have become morally and physically outdated (due to numerous rewinds).
Since up to 70% of the total electricity consumption in industry is spent on powering electric motors (mostly asynchronous), an outdated electric motor in production "overconsumes" energy for hundreds of thousands of hryvnias. Replacing old equipment with energy-efficient motors pays for itself in just 1 year.
